For those of you who aren't aware, we have suffered a significant degradation of service starting last night (July 9, 2007) at around 9:15 PM. And, as of this morning (July 10, 2007) at 8:45AM it still has not been resolved.

I spoke with the company we buy our internet from last night since it appeared that our network was functioning properly and was informed that the problem appeared to be with their supplier. This morning I learn that it now appears to be a "denial of service" attack from the outside on the company that we buy our internet from.

Without going into a lot of details, denial of service attacks are caused when a hacker takes remote control of hundreds of personal computers (most of the time without the owner's permission or knowledge). These "zombie" computers are then used to hammer the target server and bring it down.

There are few defenses against such an attack and the company we buy our internet from is attempting to remedy the problem but we may just have to wait this out.

 ADDENDUM July 10, 2007 2:30 PM: Just got word from the company that supplies our internet that they believe they are back to capacity. They have been working with their supplier and they believe they have it under control.
